Upcoming exhibition: 6 June 2026 – 10 January 2027

A TREE IS A TREE IS A TREE: THE TREE CHAPEL

The audience encounters the artist’s large portraits of trees. They were painted in her studio in Paris as part of overcoming depression. The result has become a meditative chapel full of light. We think the series of works plays well with the large panorama hall at the Silkeborg Bad Art Center, where the audience can linger in the view of both Ørnsø and the trees outside and the lovely vibrant painting that reflects many emotions, among other things.

The individual paintings highlight the organic life of the tree and the tree's living strength. Maria Dubin has typically worked with a detail of the individual tree. The viewer is allowed, almost as if with an X-ray, to look behind the bark. And through the artist's use of color and compositional rhythm, the pulse and life of the tree can almost be felt. Many emotions – from sadness to joy – are played out in the tree portraits, which form a complete series.

In 2024, graphic versions of these paintings were donated by the Beckett Foundation to Aarhus University Hospital, where they now delight patients and staff at the Department of Radiology and Scanning. Maria Dubin has also previously created works specifically for hospitals around the world with the aim of creating hope for some people who need it the most.

It is being planned that the work series A Tree is A Tree is A Tree (the paintings) will eventually find permanent residence at a hospital in Washington DC, precisely as a contribution to hope, healing and meditation. We are therefore very pleased to be able to show the painting series here at KunstCentret Silkeborg Bad before it travels to the USA.
